Frances Tiafoe: Tennis Star on the Rise

Born in Maryland in 1998, Frances grew up at the tennis center where his father worked. Tennis has been part of his life since he was 4 years old.

Early Life 

His parents fled Sierra Leone's civil war. His dad worked at the tennis center, while his mom worked night shifts as a nurse.

Frances and his twin brother began tennis lessons at 4. He showed great talent early on.

Starting Tennis 

In 2015, at age 17, Tiafoe went pro. By 20, he won his first ATP title at Delray Beach.

In 2019, Tiafoe reached his first major quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

In 2022, he beat Rafael Nadal and reached the US Open semifinals, the first Black American man to do so since 1972.
